Tattoo - The analytic transcription tool

Analyze dynamic processes of audio and video from actions and interactions in any field at any level of detail; from split second micro analysis to longitudinal research studies.

Transcription and analysis of video recordings can be done in many ways. The work is often complex and raises many questions concerning methods and theoretical grounding. Regardless of level it can indeed be a very time consuming undertaking. Tattoo is a software tool designed to make the complex processes somewhat easier. Tattoo was originally developed to aid the research of video recorded educational interaction; from close-up descriptions of teachers’ and students’ interaction, to systematic analysis of patterns of interaction and learning opportunities. Thanks to an open and flexible design it can also be used in a variety of instances where transcription and analysis of recorded sound and/or moving images is needed.

Tattoo is built around open standards to facilitate flexibility and development from shared ideas. It is designed to work on a number of computers with different operating systems, and can be obtained for free at www.sonartdesign.se. Transferable data in xml-format gives the opportunity to cooperate on data over the Internet to share and validate findings. Tattoo is an open source project so that anybody can join in the shared development.

To use Tattoo in Windows you need to install the Java Runtime Environment and QuickTime for java before installing the application.
